Allergens

The Food Allergy Labeling and Consumer Protection Act (FALCPA) established specific labeling requirements for the "big 8" major allergens. These allergens are peanuts, eggs, milk products, wheat, tree nuts, soy, fish and shellfish.

Prior to the introduction of this law, there were many exceptions to proper labeling of allergens. These exceptions, as the case with incidental additives were problematic because they were listed generically, which meant that if any ingredients contained a trace amount of a food allergen, the allergen was not explicitly listed.

The Food Allergen Labeling law is designed to correct these types of concerns.
